Gum Disease and Your Health...
Gum disease might place more at risk than just your
teeth! The most current research suggests that periodontal
disease may be a serious threat to your overall health.
Common periodontal diseases, gingivitis and periodontitis,
are one of the most common diseases in humans. These
periodontal diseases are caused by a bacterial infection
of the gum and bone surrounding teeth. Recent research
suggests a possible correlation between periodontal
disease and a number of serious health conditions. The
infection of periodontal disease may contribute to the
development of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes,
atherosclerosis, endocarditis, adverse pregnancy outcomes
and certain respiratory diseases. If you have
diabetes, periodontal disease may be a risk factor
in the progression and successful control of diabetes.
If you have any of the above conditions, you should
see a periodontist for a thorough evaluation of your
gums. Healthy gums may lead to a healthier body.
