The transmission of gum disease between family members...
Recent evidence suggests that the bacteria that cause
periodontal disease can be passed between family members.
These bacteria may be transmitted from one spouse to
another or from parents to children. Other research
has shown an association between periodontal disease
and immediate family members. The bacteria that cause
gum disease can pass through saliva. This could place
other family members at risk.
The American Academy of Periodontology recognizes that
treatment of gum disease may involve entire families.
If one family member has periodontal disease, the American
Academy of Periodontology recommends that all family
members see a dental professional for a periodontal
screening.
