Story Behind the DDS Plan

Naples & Fort Myers Periodontal Disease in Seniors

Gingivitis and periodontitis are both chronic bacterial infections of the gum and bone surrounding teeth. Most research correlates increased age with increased prevalence of periodontal disease. In other words, older patients struggle more with periodontal disease than younger patients.

Gingivitis, the least severe form of periodontal disease, is commonly found in childhood and adolescence. Estimates for the prevalence of gingivitis among U.S. school children have ranged from 40% to 60%, while estimates in adults have ranged from 39% to 47%. It’s more common for adults to struggle with periodontitis, a more severe form of periodontal disease. Reports indicate that the population of adults with periodontitis exceeded 70% in adults aged 35 to 44 and was more than 90% in adults 55 to 64. The severity of periodontal disease also seems to be age-related. Typically, older adults have more severe cases.

Periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss and tooth extractions in adults 35 and older. If you’re over the age of 35, there is a 75% to 90% change you will have a problem with some form of this common oral health condition. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology recommend a periodontal exam as part of all checkups and as part of all routine dental treatments. If you’re concerned about your smile, make sure this is part of your routine care. Remember, periodontal disease is usually painless and has subtle signs and symptoms. It’s often present but overlooked. The only good way to know if you have periodontal disease is through a proper exam by a dentist like Dr. Hoop, who is trained and knowledgeable in the diagnosis of periodontal diseases.
