Story Behind the DDS Plan

Fort Myers & Naples Periodontal Disease Dentist

The two most common forms of periodontal disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. It’s been estimated that periodontitis will affect four out of five adults, and it’s the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35. It is caused by the accumulation of plaque, a colorless film of bacteria that forms on teeth. Over time, it irritates the gums, causing them to become red, tender, and swollen. However, because the early symptoms of periodontal disease are subtle, many patients aren’t even aware that they’re struggling with it until their condition reaches a mature stage of development.

In its advanced stages, successful treatment of periodontal disease is less predictable, more involved, and more time consuming. Proper treatment emphasizes early detection and early treatment. With early treatment, care is generally less involved, less costly, more comfortable, and the results last longer.

Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss your teeth
  • Frequent bad breath or a chronic bad taste in your mouth
  • Shrunken or receding gums
  • Pus between your teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth
  • A change in your bite or the way your partial dentures fit
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums

The good news is that you can treat these symptoms and prevent tooth loss through regular professional visits and good home care. If you’re concerned you may have gum disease, you have questions about preventing gum disease, or you’d like to schedule an appointment call our Fort Myers or Naples office.
