5 Reasons YOU Should Visit the Dentist Soon

April 11, 2018

Filed under: Blog — wemakeyousmile @ 7:00 pm

You know you should go to the dentist, but …
You got busy.
You forgot.
You may not want to admit it, but you get dental anxiety. (It’s OK. Trust us, you aren’t the only one.)
Well, no matter why you’ve been putting off your next dental appointment, we have five good reasons you should visit one of our general dentist offices in North Naples or Fort Myers, FL soon. George A. Hoop, DDS, and the rest of our team are ready to provide you with the best oral care modern dentistry can provide.
Call (239) 594-8817 to make an appointment with us today!

Fight Cavities!

Let’s start with the basics. You need to brush and floss your teeth every day, but that isn’t enough to prevent cavities.
We’re all human, and no one brushes their teeth perfectly every time. That means you are likely to have some plaque and tartar buildup over time.
Through professional dental cleanings, we will remove that cavity-causing plaque and keep your teeth healthy. Then, we’ll polish them to give you a better smile.
And if you want to improve your smile even more, just ask about our cosmetic services.

Stop Gum Disease!

We know we just mentioned that you should floss daily. Yet, we also know from experience and from a recent survey conducted on behalf of the American Dental Association that fewer than half of people are taking time to floss daily.
That’s a problem because flossing is how you remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth and gums. If you don’t do this, you are inviting bacteria to grow and cause a gum infection.
That leads to gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States!
If you want to keep your smile, you need to floss, and you should give our dental professionals an opportunity to inspect your gums twice a year. If we see any symptoms of gum disease, we can treat it before your teeth are at risk.
But only if you visit us regularly.

Pain-free Dentistry!

You may understand everything we’ve said so far, but that does not make it any easier to go to the dentist if you do have dental anxiety.
We offer two types of sedation to make your dental visits easier to handle. With laughing gas and oral sedation, you won’t feel any pain. You will stay relaxed and calm, and you will not gag during your cleaning.
We also use advanced technology to make your visit more efficient and effective.

Protect Your Smile!

April is National Facial Protection Month, which makes this a good time to remind you that we also make athletic mouthguards at our offices.
These are better than the boil-and-bite mouthguard you’ll find in stores. Our mouthguards are custom-fitted for each patient.
As a result, our mouthguards offer better protection, feel more comfortable, and won’t interfere with your ability to breathe or talk to your teammates.
If you play a sport that involves running, jumping, and/or contact, you need a mouthguard. According to the ADA, athletes who don’t wear mouthguards are 60 times more likely to suffer dental injuries than those who do.

Get Screened for Oral Cancer!

This probably isn’t the first reason you think of going to the dentist, but oral cancer screenings are invaluable.
Plus, April also is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. That makes this a good time to tell you about our VELscope.
We will conduct a visual inspection of your mouth, but if someone has any signs of oral cancer, we want to find it as early as possible. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, 80 to 90 percent of patients whose oral cancer is detected in the early stages survive.
The VELscope measure the fluorescence of the soft tissue of your mouth. As a result, it can identify suspicious tissue long before anyone would spot it with their eyes alone.

Someone calls you over. She wants to get a photo with you and everyone in your family.
Not long ago, a request would have made you nervous, but not today — not anymore.

Would you like to feel that way about your replacement teeth? If so, call us at (239) 594-8817 to schedule an appointment at either of our locations. We have offices in Fort Myers and North Naples, FL.
This could be the start of a beautiful new smile!

The Right Fit Makes a HUGE Difference

You’ve heard the stories about slippery dentures. Heck, you may have even experienced them for yourself.
Loose dentures make it hard to eat. Loose dentures can make it difficult to speak sometimes, too. And having your dentures fall out in front of someone else can be awkward for both of you.
To avoid this, you want dentures that are custom-designed for your mouth. This is why we use “dynamic impressions” when making dentures. This takes into account how your facial muscles move as you open and close your mouth.
That means your dentures won’t just feel fine when your mouth is closed. They are much more likely to stay in place when you actually need them to as well.

Taking Care of Your Dentures is Important, Too

To get the most out of your dentures, it’s important to care for them like you should. Here are few tips that will help you get the most out of your dentures:

  • After you eat, remove your dentures and rinse them to remove any food debris.
  • Clean your mouth as well after removing your dentures.
  • Brush your dentures every day. This is important both for the sake of your dentures and for your oral health.
  • Soak your dentures overnight with an appropriate solution.
  • Again, rinse your dentures in the morning before putting them back in your mouth.
  • Handle your dentures careful. Avoid bending or dropping them.

You also must continue to make dental appointments. Some people think that having fake teeth means they no longer need dental care. That’s not true. You can still develop gum disease, which can have a big impact on how your dentures feel.
Likewise, you should let us know when you notice changes in how your dentures fit. With traditional dentures, it will be necessary to have them relined from time to time to maintain their fit.

Add Some Security

With any dentures that rest over your gums, you will experience bone loss in your jaw. Without the roots of your teeth to stimulate new bone growth, your jaw will get smaller. Over time, this will affect the way your dentures fit and feel.
This is why you need to have dentures relined.
A great way to avoid those issues is to get dental implants.
Implants were developed to replace the roots of missing teeth. Implants are placed directly in your jaw. They can be used to anchor your dentures in place, thus creating a direct connection between your dentures and your jawbone.
That connection allows you to put more force behind each bite and chew. That pressure is what stimulates the bone growth necessary to prevent bone loss.
That also means you won’t need to replace your denture nearly as often, if at all. With implant- or mini implant-supported dentures, you can have the smile of your dreams and still eat all the foods that you love to eat.

Don’t settle for slippery, loose-fitting dentures. Let Dr. Hoop design a set of dentures just for you. Remember to ask about getting implants, too!
